Part One - Hospital Authority

Introduction to the Traditional Chinese Medicine (and integrated Chinese and Western medicine) treatment provided by the Hospital Authority

The Hospital Authority (HA) has gradually established Chinese Medicine Teaching and Research Centers in all 18 districts in Hong Kong since 2003, promoting Chinese medicine services based on "teaching" and "research". The Chinese Medicine Teaching and Research Centers are operated in a tripartite partnership model by the HA, non-governmental organizations, and local universities, with non-governmental organizations responsible for the daily operation of the clinics, providing Chinese medicine services to the public.

The Chief Executive announced in the "2018 Policy Address" that Chinese medicine is part of the Hong Kong healthcare system. Starting in March 2020, the Chinese Medicine Teaching and Research Centers in all 18 districts were officially renamed "Chinese Medicine Clinics cum Teaching and Research Centers" (Chinese Medicine Clinics), which, in addition to providing training and research functions, also provide new government-subsidized outpatient services for eligible Hong Kong residents at the district level.

To draw on the experience of Chinese and Western medicine collaboration and Chinese medicine inpatient services, the government commissioned the HA to implement the Chinese and Western Medicine Collaboration Program in 2014. The HA provides inpatient services and follow-up outpatient services for Chinese and Western medicine collaboration treatment for inpatients with four selected disease categories (including stroke, musculoskeletal pain, and cancer palliative treatment) at designated public hospitals. Starting from April 2021, the HA has added inpatient services for Chinese and Western medicine collaboration stroke treatment at the United Hospital, and currently eight hospitals provide the above services, covering seven hospital networks of the HA.

In addition, the HA launched the "18 District Chinese Medicine Clinics" mobile application in June 2021, making it convenient for the public to inquire about information on Chinese medicine clinics and make appointments for government-subsidized Chinese medicine outpatient services, providing another option besides telephone appointments.

Patients choosing integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment for cancer has become a trend, hoping to increase the chance of cure. Western medicine is mainly based on accurate diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, based on clinical evidence, targeting the main tumor and latent tumor cells, symptomatic treatment.

The anti-tumor effect of Chinese medicine is milder. Its advantage lies in the overall conditioning of the patient's physique and enhancing immunity, improving the patient's quality of life.

Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Centre

In light of this, the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society established the Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Centre at its headquarters in September 2012, thanks to the generous donation from Dr. and Mrs. Mak Shiu Kin. The centre is a pioneer in the integrated Chinese and Western medical treatment of cancer. Cancer patients at the centre can choose to have a joint consultation with our oncology specialist and a Chinese medicine practitioner from the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society - Hong Kong Baptist University Chinese Medicine Centre, who specializes in treating cancer patients. Together, they will develop an appropriate treatment plan for the cancer patient, allowing the patient to start the treatment process in time, enhance the treatment effect and reduce the side effects of the treatment.
